The Lord Put Us Into the Deaf Ministry

Many have asked me, “How did you learn Sign Language?” Why did you become a missionary to the Deaf?” I would like to share my testimony with you. I am thankful God has counted me faithful and He put me into the ministry (I Tim. 1:12).

I grew up in a Christian home. I was always in church. In my mind, I was a Christian because my parents were and because I went to church. When I was nine-years-old, I went to our church camp. That week, a missionary shared the idea that God has no grand-children. What did that mean? “But as many as received him [Jesus], to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12). There it was! Sons of God (or daughters – smile). I understood my need for Jesus’ death on the cross, His burial, and His resurrection from the dead to forgive my sins. Then I became His child!

Later, at age thirteen, I went to a youth rally (meeting). It was at this meeting that I dedicated my life to the Lord to serve Him. I really wanted to be a missionary and to tell others about Jesus. I met my husband in Bible College. When we graduated from college, God put us in the ministry in a small church. We thought we would stay for a year or two and then go to the mission field. God had other plans. He opened the door for us to go to a large church in Maryland. We were there for ten years. It was there that God first touched my husband’s heart to learn Sign Language, so he could share the Gospel with the Deaf.

It was six years later, in a different church and state that God touched my heart also. I started to learn more Signs because four Deaf came to our church and needed an interpreter. I volunteered for the job. God was working in many ways. Finally, in 1999 our family surrendered to serve the Lord full time with SWM. It is a joy to serve Him! I thank God that He put us into the ministry! “And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me (us) faithful, putting me (us) into the ministry” (1Tim.1:12). This is how and why we are in the Deaf ministry. Why? The Lord put us there!
