What’s Up?

What’s Up? The 25th Annual Midwest Deaf Retreat, April 27-29, 2017, will be held at Camp Joy, Whitewater, WI, hosted by Woodcrest Baptist Church, Fridley, MN, Pastor Mark Poorman, Deaf Leader, Perry Ward. Speaker: Deaf Pastor Jim Campbell (IPM), Grace Bible Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD. For more information, contact Perry Ward,  VP: 612-326-9087.

What’s Up? Sympathy to the family of Susie (Sue) Henson (age 93), missionary to the deaf of Mexico. She passed away on January 29 in Canton, NC, surrounded by her family. She and her late husband, Rev. Ronald Henson, served the Lord in Mexico for many years. They established churches for the deaf in both Monterrey and Guadalajara. Before becoming missionaries, they led the deaf ministry at Highland Park Baptist Church, Chattanooga, TN. Her daughter Rebecca writes, “Although Mom had faced many physical challenges in recent years, she maintained her sweet and loving disposition. She read the Bible and prayed with others in her nursing home, and often abandoned her own walker so she could push the wheelchair of someone in need of her help.” The Hensons leave a legacy of love for the Deaf and family, faithfulness to the Lord, and servant hearts.

What’s Up? Make plans to attend the 37th Annual Deaf Baptist Fellowship of America, June 20 – 23, 2017. It will be held at Westside Baptist Church, Seattle, Washington, hosted by Dr. Bruce Kelly. Contact:

What’s Up? Great news from Missionaries to the Deaf Lee and Eva Johnson, Chiclayo, Peru. Lee writes, “Eva and I are rejoicing over the long awaited process of Eva becoming a naturalized citizen of the United States of America. God allowed us to plug along through years of struggle. Finally, on November 29, 2016, Eva became an American citizen.” Pray for the Johnsons and their church people as they continue the process of their new church building.

What’s Up? It was good to see Bob & Trisha Hicks at the Trenton Fantastic Saturday. They are co-workers who were “there” for SWM in a time of need. They now live in Madison, AL.

What’s Up? Sympathy to the family Jack E Thompson, age 77, Clarkston, MI, who passed away January 5, 2017. He was a friend and adviser to David Bennett, SWMI, and a servant to his church, Grace Baptist, Birmingham, MI, where he had been a member since 1977. His daughter Bethany, missionary to the Deaf, wrote, “My father made his reservation in heaven, trusting Christ as his personal Savior when he was a child. I am so blessed to have had a father who raised me by example to love and serve the Lord. He will be so greatly missed, but I know he is pain-free in the presence of his Savior.”

What’s Up? The ladies of Harvest Deaf Ministries, Ringgold, GA, recently enjoyed a special retreat in Pigeon Forge, TN. The special speaker was Sue Thomas, the inspiration behind the television series “Sue Thomas: F. B. Eye.” Her strong Christian testimony and obvious love for her Savior was a huge blessing and challenge.

What’s Up? SWM ladies were privileged to attend Harvest Deaf Ministries’ Ladies Retreat and to hear Sue Thomas. Pictured with Sue Thomas L to R: Terry Bracelin, Diane Barr, Carlene Camp, Vicki Shiffer, and Tabitha Beam.

What’s Up? Deaf Spiritual Leadership Camp will be July 23-27 at Camp Gilead in Polk City, Florida. It is for Deaf children, teenagers, young adults, and families. What’s Up? Please pray for Karyn Conrad, missionary to the Deaf, sent from Trinity Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Florida, deaf pastor John Olson. She is preparing to go to Lima, Peru, to be a part of Efata Baptist Ministries, with Joe and Lisa Kotvas. She is on deputation – available for meetings.

What’s Up? SWM’s Allen Snare is celebrating two special events in 2017. This year marks his 42nd year in ministry and on April 14, he will celebrate his 70th birthday. Allen remains strong physically as well as spiritually. He continues to travel to reach the Deaf for Christ. He often says, “My heart’s desire is to see more deaf people saved.” Allen is a faithful servant of the Lord and a great example for other Deaf men to follow. (He still has the zeal and heart of a young man – TC).

What’s Up? Christian sympathies to deaf friend, Destiny Carson, Liberty Baptist Church of the Deaf, Columbus, OH. Her mother, age 62, passed away March 1, in Milwaukee, WI. Please pray for Destiny during this time of loss. She and her mom communicated on face time every day.
